What Are the Gastrocnemius Muscles?

A well-toned calf muscle is a sign of a strong gastrocnemius muscle. Not only do bodybuilders pay special attention to this important muscle during training, athletes who depend on calf strength, such as runners, basketball and football players, ice skaters, and skiers also work hard to keep these muscles in tip-top shape.

This two-pronged muscle is located at the back of the lower leg and has two “heads” that begin above the knee and run down to the heel, covering three joints.
